The pattern — wide vertical boards with narrow trim battens covering the joints between them — has become the signature exterior profile of the modern farmhouse and transitional custom home aesthetic. What was historically a utilitarian agricultural siding style has become one of the most in-demand looks in residential custom construction.
But board and batten is more than an aesthetic trend. When installed correctly with the right materials and proper details, it's a durable, weather-resistant exterior system that performs well in North Carolina's climate. When installed poorly or in the wrong material, it's a maintenance headache that can fail in just a few years. Here's what you need to know before specifying board and batten for your custom home.
Understanding the Board and Batten Pattern

A board butted hard against the horizontal trim piece will wick moisture between them at any caulk failure point. The gap, properly caulked, can be inspected and recaulked over the building's life as needed.
Corner Treatment
Inside and outside corners can be handled with corner trim boards (traditional) or by overlapping the siding at corners (simpler, creates a continuous weather barrier). Both work when properly detailed with caulking at all junctions. What doesn't work: leaving exposed end grain at corners without trim coverage.
Batten Application
Battens must be nailed through into framing or sheathing — not just through the board behind them. A batten fastened only to the siding panel behind it will loosen as the batten and panel expand and contract at different rates. Nail every 12 inches vertically through the batten into solid framing or blocking behind the sheathing.
